What is 310?
310 is a type of stainless steel that stands out for its impressive heat resistance, facilitated by a high chromium and nickel content. 310’s heat resistance can reach up to 1150°C (2102°F).
When compared to other more common stainless-steel grades (such as 304 that offers up to 870°C intermittent heat resistance), 310 stainless is a worthwhile investment in increasing longevity and durability. This makes it a preferential option in situations that would require prolonged exposure to harsh temperatures.
Resistant to high temperatures
310 notably has a high chromium and nickel content (24-26% Cr, 19-22% Ni). The elevated chromium content forms a chromium oxide layer on the surface of the metal that acts as a barrier against oxidation, while the nickel content promotes an austenitic crystal structure that enhances mechanical strength in high temperature conditions.
Both combined form a material that reliably can be used in continuous temperatures up to 1150°C (2102°F), while also retaining toughness at extremely low temperatures. 310 can maintain its properties down to due to its face-centred cubic structure. The material can maintain toughness and low magnetic permeability, making it useful in cryogenic applications.
Resistant to Oxidation
The high chromium and nickel content in 310 forms a protective passive layer, protecting the material from oxidation and rust. This protective layer protects the material from internal damage, consequently reducing the possibility of damage. This again highlights 310 as a durable and reliable material that can withstand very high temperatures and resist deterioration due to oxidation.
Good Weldability
310 also offers good weldability, it is purely austenitic which facilitates toughness and ductility. 310 also comes in a lower carbon variant, 310S (S31008 – 1.4845), which improves on weldability further.
Overall, 310 is a great choice when looking for a material to be used in harsh temperatures. The material boasts good weldability and a promising resistance to creep deformation, oxidation, sulfidation and carburisation. 310 is a worthwhile investment for these reasons, its reliability and ductility make it stand out as an excellent choice for prolonged use in extreme high/low temperatures.
All materials will be certified to NACE-MR0175 and NACE MR0103 and the latest pressure equipment directive (PED 2014/68/EU. The material is also certified to ASTM and ASME. The material comes with certificates to EN10204 3.1.
